A model called Contrast Avoidance explains why anxious people sometimes prefer dread to hope — and why that changes everything about how we treat chronic worry.

Picture someone who has just gotten good news. A job offer came through. The diagnosis was benign. A relationship that felt wobbly turned out to be fine. Most people, upon hearing this, feel relief — a loosening, a breath out. But for some people, good news lands with a low-grade dread underneath it. The relief never quite arrives clean. Instead, there's a creeping awareness of how bad it could have been, a sudden sensitivity to what might still go wrong, or an almost reflexive impulse to find the catch. They don't enjoy the reprieve. They start preparing for the next threat.

This is not pessimism, exactly. It's not even negativity bias in the simple, pop-psych sense of the word. What's happening is more specific and, once you understand the mechanism, more understandable than it first appears. These people have learned — not consciously, but through the long accumulation of emotional experience — that feeling good is dangerous. Not because good feelings are bad, but because the drop from good to bad is brutal. The shock of a sudden negative shift in emotion is, for some nervous systems, far more distressing than simply never leaving the state of low-level worry in the first place.

This is the core of what psychologists call the Contrast Avoidance Model of worry — a framework originally developed by the clinical psychologist Michelle Newman and her colleagues[1], and one that has been gaining serious traction in anxiety research. A 2025 paper in Current Psychology added new texture to how we should understand the model and, crucially, what it means for treatment. The basic claim is deceptively simple: chronic worriers worry not because they expect the worst, but because staying anxious is a strategy for avoiding an emotional gut-punch. Worry keeps the emotional floor low and steady. It blunts the contrast.

Once you hear that framing, a lot of otherwise baffling behavior starts to make sense. The person who can't enjoy a vacation because they keep imagining the flight home. The parent who catastrophizes about their kid's fever at 1 AM not because they believe it's meningitis, but because imagining meningitis feels like it grants some kind of terrible armor. The partner who picks a fight the night before a trip — not to sabotage the trip, but because the anxiety of unresolved tension feels more manageable than the exposed softness of real excitement. Worry is not the malfunction. In the logic of the anxious brain, worry is the solution.

The Emotional Math of Staying Afraid

To understand contrast avoidance, you have to first take seriously the idea that emotions don't just have valence — positive or negative — they have trajectory. The direction of change matters as much as the state itself. Research in affective science has long shown that humans are exquisitely sensitive to emotional shifts, particularly negative ones. The technical term is affective contrast[3]: the experienced intensity of a negative state is amplified when it follows a positive one. Losing a hundred dollars hurts more when you just found fifty. Getting bad news feels worse on an otherwise good day. This isn't melodrama. It's a real feature of how the nervous system processes change.

The amygdala, the brain's threat-detection system, is central to this. It doesn't just respond to threat — it responds to the prediction of threat, and it's sensitive to mismatch between expected and actual emotional states. When life is going reasonably well and something bad happens, the prediction error is large and the distress is correspondingly acute. The brain is, in a sense, surprised — and surprise in the context of threat is its own physiological event. Heart rate spikes. Stress hormones flood. The whole system tilts into emergency mode not just because the bad thing happened, but because it happened when the guard was down.

Chronic worriers, according to the Contrast Avoidance Model, have developed an implicit understanding of this mechanism and a behavioral response to it: stay at baseline dread, and the crash never happens. If you're already imagining the plane going down, you won't be emotionally sideswiped if the pilot announces turbulence. If you've spent the week catastrophizing about the medical test, the bad result won't obliterate you the way it would have if you'd let yourself feel hopeful. This is not a conscious calculation. Nobody sits down and thinks: I will deploy worry as an emotional shock absorber. It happens through learning — through years of experiencing relief as temporary, hope as reckless, and vigilance as the only thing that ever actually prepared you for anything.

Why Relief Feels Like a Risk

There's a particular subset of worriers for whom positive emotion itself feels threatening — and the Contrast Avoidance Model offers a cleaner account of this than almost any other framework. If you've grown up in an environment where good periods reliably preceded bad ones, or where relaxing meant getting caught off guard, or where hope was repeatedly punished by disappointment, then your emotional learning history will have encoded a simple lesson: relaxation is a vulnerability. Feeling safe means you've stopped watching. And if you stop watching, that's when something terrible happens.

This isn't irrational within its own internal logic. It's a learned prediction, built from real data, even if the data is old and the environment has changed. The brain's learning systems — particularly those involving the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex working together to build predictive models of the world — don't automatically update when circumstances improve. A nervous system that learned in childhood that calm = exposure to ambush doesn't simply recalibrate when adulthood provides a safer context. The old model persists, running quietly underneath, generating the chronic low-level dread that gets labeled as generalized anxiety disorder, overthinking, or just an anxious personality.

What this means in practice is that these individuals aren't afraid of bad outcomes in the way we usually mean it. They're afraid of positive emotional states, because positive states precede the drop. A 2025 Current Psychology paper examining the model's mechanisms noted that this fear of positive emotion — sometimes called discomfort with emotional lability — is a better predictor of chronic worry patterns than simply expecting bad things to happen. The worrier's problem isn't catastrophizing per se. It's an aversion to the emotional rollercoaster. Flat is manageable. Up-and-then-down is not.

The Difference Between Worry and Rumination — and Why It Matters

Worry and rumination get lumped together constantly, and they do share territory, but the Contrast Avoidance Model helps sharpen the distinction. Worry is typically future-oriented: something bad might happen, let me think through every possible version of it. Rumination is past-oriented: something bad did happen, let me replay it until I understand why. Both involve repetitive, difficult-to-control thinking. Both correlate strongly with anxiety and depression. But they serve slightly different psychological functions, and understanding that matters for anyone trying to get out from under them.

Worry, in the contrast avoidance frame, is primarily a regulatory strategy — it's trying to manage the anticipation of negative affect. Rumination often functions as a kind of meaning-making gone wrong: the default mode network[4], which activates when the mind is not engaged with external tasks, keeps pulling old painful material forward, ostensibly trying to find resolution but mostly just re-traumatizing the emotional memory system. Both processes feel compulsive partly because they're being reinforced. The worry works, in its limited way — the bad thing either doesn't happen or happens and you were ready — and so the brain files this behavior as useful. The rumination never quite resolves anything, but the activity itself becomes a habitual response to distress, a way of feeling like you're doing something even when you're just circling.

Where they converge is in avoidance. Both worry and rumination help people avoid sitting with the raw, unmediated experience of their emotions. Worry replaces the feeling of uncertainty with the feeling of preparation. Rumination replaces the feeling of helplessness with the feeling of analysis. Neither actually processes the underlying affect. They're both, in a sense, ways of thinking about feeling rather than feeling — which is why people who do both can spend enormous amounts of mental energy on their emotional lives and still feel emotionally stuck.

What This Changes About Treatment

Standard cognitive-behavioral approaches to anxiety have traditionally focused on the content of worry: testing the predictions, building evidence against catastrophic thinking, practicing tolerance for uncertainty. These approaches have real efficacy, and they've helped a lot of people. But the Contrast Avoidance Model suggests that for chronic worriers, the deeper target isn't the catastrophic thought itself. It's the fear of positive emotion and the aversion to emotional lability. If a person believes that feeling good is dangerous — that it sets them up for the fall — then teaching them that their worst fears probably won't come true misses the functional role the worry is playing.

What the model points toward instead is working directly with the emotional mechanics: specifically, helping people increase their tolerance for positive emotional states, sit with hope without treating it as recklessness, and gradually habituate to the experience of emotional contrast. This is different from exposure therapy for feared objects or situations. It's something more like exposure to feeling good — practicing the experience of positive affect without immediately catastrophizing it away, and learning at the level of the nervous system that the drop is survivable. That the contrast is uncomfortable but not annihilating. That relief does not have to be held at arm's length to protect you.

Some clinicians working in this space have started experimenting with emotion-focused interventions that explicitly target fear of positive experience, alongside the more familiar work on intolerance of uncertainty. The 2025 Current Psychology paper noted that interventions which address contrast sensitivity directly — rather than only challenging the content of catastrophic predictions — may produce better outcomes for people whose worry patterns are strongly driven by this mechanism. The science here is still developing; it would be dishonest to say we have fully validated treatment protocols. But the conceptual shift is meaningful. There's something quietly important about having a model that frames chronic worry as a strategy rather than a symptom of deficiency. Not because it lets anyone off the hook — worry causes real suffering, disrupts relationships, corrodes sleep, and consumes enormous cognitive resources that could go elsewhere. But because calling someone's deeply ingrained coping mechanism a brain malfunction doesn't give them anything useful to work with. It just adds self-judgment to the pile.

People who worry chronically are often already acutely aware that their anxiety is disproportionate to the actual threat. They know, intellectually, that the odds are fine. They have been told this by many people. The problem is that the knowledge doesn't land where the worry lives. The contrast avoidance frame explains why: the worry isn't tracking probability. It's managing emotional exposure. And emotional exposure is managed not by knowing that things are probably okay, but by slowly, bodily learning that things being okay doesn't have to be terrifying.

There's also something that tends to get left out of the conversation about anxiety: the physical sensation of relief itself can become a source of grief for people who've learned to distrust it. Not being able to fully inhabit good news, to genuinely rest in a quiet moment, to feel happiness that doesn't carry a shadow — that's its own kind of loss. The Contrast Avoidance Model doesn't just explain the mechanics of chronic worry. It helps locate the thing that's actually been stolen from people who live inside it: not their optimism, exactly, but their right to feel good without bracing for the cost.

The goal, then, isn't to become someone who never worries. Worry is a real cognitive tool — it helps plan, it helps prepare, it sometimes genuinely protects. The goal is a nervous system flexible enough to let in both possibilities without treating hope as naivety and relief as a trap. For someone who has spent years running a low-grade dread as insurance against emotional whiplash, that flexibility is not a small ask. But it is, at least, the right ask — because finally, someone has correctly identified what the problem actually is.
