Not to be confused with: Critical Transition

The threshold at which a small change triggers a large, often irreversible shift in a system. In climate science, it marks when warming crosses a limit (like melting ice or releasing gases), causing the system to reorganize on its own. Beyond this point, the original state cannot be restored without extreme intervention.

What this means in real life

A teenager ignores friends' casual comments about a new music genre for months, then hears one song that clicks—suddenly they're obsessed and their entire friend group follows. That one song was the tipping point.

What it isn’t

Not simply 'the moment something becomes popular' or 'when most people agree.' A tipping point is specifically the threshold where momentum becomes self-sustaining and unstoppable, not just when a majority is reached.

Commonly misused online

Social media often calls any viral moment or sudden trend a 'tipping point,' but true tipping points involve irreversible systemic change—not just a temporary spike in attention or engagement.
