Extreme Weather Attribution
A scientific method that quantifies how much human-caused climate change altered the probability or severity of a specific extreme weather event.

A climate science technique that estimates how much global warming influenced the likelihood and intensity of a particular extreme weather event. Rather than claiming climate change caused an event outright, it calculates the change in probability or magnitude attributable to human activities. Developed over recent decades, it uses statistical models and observational data to compare actual conditions with counterfactual scenarios absent human warming.
What this means in real life
After a devastating heatwave, scientists might determine that climate change made the event 5 times more likely to occur than it would have been 50 years ago—allowing policymakers and insurers to better understand modern climate risks.
What it isn’t
It is not a claim that climate change caused an extreme weather event to happen at all. Attribution science measures how much human influence changed the odds or intensity, not whether the event would have been impossible otherwise.
Commonly misused online
Social media often treats attribution as binary—either 'climate change caused this storm' or 'it's natural weather.' In reality, attribution quantifies a shift in probability, not a simple yes-or-no cause.
