Attribution Study
Scientific analysis that determines whether a specific weather event was caused or made more likely by human-caused climate change.
Not to be confused with: Extreme Weather Attribution
A quantitative research method that compares observed weather or climate events against climate models to assess the role of human greenhouse gas emissions. Attribution studies measure how much more likely or severe an event became due to anthropogenic warming, typically expressed as a probability ratio or temperature increase.
What this means in real life
After a school implements a new reading program, researchers conduct an attribution study to determine whether improved test scores came from the program itself, better teacher training, increased parental involvement, or a combination of factors.
What it isn’t
Not the same as a simple before-and-after comparison. An attribution study goes deeper to isolate which specific cause drove the change, rather than just observing that something changed after an intervention.
Commonly misused online
Often conflated with 'correlation study' on social media; people cite attribution studies to prove causation when the study only identified contributing factors without ruling out confounding variables.
