Cognitive and Emotional Resources
cognitive and emotional resources are the mental and emotional capacity you need to function—when depleted, tasks feel harder and conversations require more effort.

Not to be confused with: Cognitive Assets
cognitive and emotional resources refer to the internal mental and psychological capacity an individual uses to process information, regulate emotions, and perform daily tasks. These resources encompass attention, memory, decision-making ability, and emotional stability, which are depleted by stress, burnout, or chronic demands and restored through recovery activities. They are essential for maintaining functional well-being and life satisfaction.
What this means in real life
A parent juggling work deadlines and a sick child has limited cognitive resources left for patience; they snap at minor frustrations because their mental bandwidth is already consumed.
What it isn’t
Not simply intelligence or IQ. A highly intelligent person can still have depleted cognitive and emotional resources due to exhaustion, trauma, or overwhelming circumstances—smarts alone don't guarantee the capacity to think clearly or stay calm.
Commonly misused online
Often flattened to mean 'willpower' or 'motivation,' when it actually encompasses attention, memory, emotional regulation, and physical energy—a much broader ecosystem than just trying harder.
