BrainHook Glossary

Working Memory

The mental capacity to temporarily hold and manipulate information—like remembering a phone number while dialing it.

Working Memory — BrainHook Glossary card

The cognitive system that briefly holds and processes information needed for immediate tasks, such as mental arithmetic or following instructions. It acts as a mental workspace with limited capacity, typically retaining information for seconds to minutes without rehearsal. Distinct from long-term memory, it enables reasoning, problem-solving, and attention.

What this means in real life

When someone gives you directions and you mentally repeat the street names and turns while driving, you're using this capacity to keep those details accessible just long enough to act on them.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as attention or focus. You can pay attention to something without holding it in this temporary mental space, and you can hold information here while attending to something else.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'short-term memory,' though the latter is broader and more passive. Social media posts frequently use the terms interchangeably, obscuring that this system actively manipulates information, not just stores it.
