What this means in real life

When our Sun dies in about 5 billion years, it will shed its outer layers into space and leave behind a white dwarf remnant—a glowing, Earth-sized ember that will gradually fade to black over trillions of years.

What it isn’t

This is not a black hole or neutron star. Those form from much more massive stars and are far denser. A white dwarf is the endpoint for medium-mass stars and is still visible as it cools, whereas black holes emit no light.

Commonly misused online
