Type Ia Supernovae

Type Ia supernovae are uniform stellar explosions of white dwarfs used as 'standard candles' to measure cosmic distances and map the universe's expansion driven by dark energy.

Type Ia supernovae are thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in binary star systems, triggered when the dwarf accretes matter from a companion and exceeds a critical mass limit (the Chandrasekhar limit). Because they exhibit nearly uniform peak brightness, they serve as 'standard candles' to measure vast cosmic distances and study the universe's expansion rate and dark energy.

What this means in real life

Imagine a vampire slowly draining blood from a victim—at some point, the victim's body can no longer sustain the loss and collapses catastrophically. Similarly, a white dwarf pulls gas from its orbiting neighbor until the accumulated material suddenly ignites in a thermonuclear explosion.

What it isn’t

Not a collision between two stars. A Type Ia supernova involves one white dwarf and a living companion star in orbit; the two don't crash together, but rather the white dwarf gradually siphons material across space.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with all supernovae or used interchangeably with 'Type II' explosions. Online, people sometimes treat them as identical events, when in fact Type Ia and Type II have completely different causes and progenitor stars.
