Trust Repair

The process of rebuilding confidence and faith in someone after they've broken trust through a mistake, betrayal, or harmful action.

Trust Repair — BrainHook Glossary card

The psychological and relational process of restoring confidence and faith in a person, institution, or relationship after trust has been damaged by a violation, mistake, or breach. It typically involves acknowledgment of harm, genuine remorse, and consistent behavior change to demonstrate that the violation won't be repeated.

What this means in real life

After a parent forgets to pick up their child from school, they apologize sincerely, explain what went wrong, and set up a reliable reminder system. Over weeks of consistent follow-through, the child gradually stops worrying about being forgotten again.

What it isn’t

It is not simply saying 'I'm sorry' or making excuses. True restoration requires the person who caused harm to demonstrate genuine understanding of the damage and sustained behavioral change, not just words.

Commonly misused online

People often treat a single apology as complete restoration, posting 'they apologized, so it's over' without recognizing that rebuilding trust requires time and consistent actions that prove the violation won't happen again.
