Thermochemical piles are massive, compositionally distinct provinces in Earth's deep mantle, identified by their slow seismic wave speeds and higher density due to iron enrichment. Unlike simple thermal plumes, they are stable, iron-rich structures with sharp boundaries, persisting for billions of years and representing a unique thermochemical anomaly rather than just hotter rock.

What this means in real life

A building's foundation piles contain a reversible chemical reaction that absorbs heat in summer (cooling the building) and releases stored heat in winter (warming it), reducing the need for air conditioning and furnaces.

What it isn’t

Not the same as standard geothermal heat pumps, which passively extract existing ground warmth. Thermochemical piles actively generate heat through chemical reactions rather than simply transferring ambient thermal energy.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with regular geothermal systems or described as 'perpetual energy' sources. In reality, they require chemical recharge cycles and are most effective as supplementary heating/cooling, not standalone replacements for all climate control.
