Thermal stratification is the separation of a fluid into layers based on temperature differences, where warmer, less dense water sits above cooler, denser water. This natural layering occurs in oceans, lakes, and other bodies of water, restricting vertical mixing and influencing oxygen distribution, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem health. It is a key concept in fluid dynamics and environmental science, with seasonal variations affecting aquatic habitats globally.

What this means in real life

A lake in summer develops a warm surface layer where swimmers enjoy comfortable water, while divers descending 20 feet encounter a sharp temperature drop into cold, dark water below—the two layers resist mixing until autumn winds break the barrier.

What it isn’t

It is not simply 'water being different temperatures in different places.' True stratification requires stable, persistent layers that resist vertical mixing; a gradually warming lake from surface to bottom without a sharp boundary is not stratified.

Commonly misused online

Often used loosely to mean 'any temperature difference' in water or air, when it specifically refers to stable, layered separation that persists over time and actively resists mixing.
