What this means in real life
When a child learns to play piano, repeated finger movements strengthen the neural pathways controlling those motions. Unused pathways for other hand movements gradually weaken and are pruned away, making the practiced skill faster and more automatic.
What it isn’t
It is not brain damage or loss of brain cells. Pruning removes only the connections between neurons, not the neurons themselves, and is a healthy, necessary part of development—not a sign of disease or decline.
Commonly misused online
Social media often frames pruning as 'losing brain cells' or suggests that screen time causes harmful pruning. In reality, pruning is a normal, beneficial process; the concern is whether activities stimulate the *right* connections to be strengthened.
