A supervoid is an enormous, nearly empty region of space significantly larger than typical cosmic voids, often spanning hundreds of millions of light-years. It acts as a region of low matter density where gravitational effects differ from dense clusters, influencing the passage of light and contributing to anomalies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), such as the Cold Spot.

What this means in real life

Imagine a sponge where most areas are densely packed with holes, but one section has much larger, more spread-out cavities—that's like a supervoid compared to the rest of the universe's galaxy distribution.

What it isn’t

A supervoid is not a black hole or a region where gravity has collapsed matter into extreme density. It's the opposite: an underdense region where galaxies are simply more spread out than elsewhere, not a gravitational trap or singularity.

Commonly misused online

Social media often conflates supervoids with 'cosmic voids' generally, or wrongly suggests they're dangerous anomalies or evidence of missing dark matter, when they're simply natural large-scale structures in galaxy distribution.
