What it isn’t
Not simply a deep ocean trench or a place where plates collide head-on. Subduction specifically means one plate slides under the other at an angle; a head-on collision between two continental plates creates mountains instead, as neither plate readily sinks.
Commonly misused online
Often conflated with 'fault lines' or used to mean any plate boundary. Social media posts sometimes treat subduction zones as synonymous with earthquakes generally, missing that they're a specific type of plate interaction with distinct geological consequences.
