What this means in real life
A doctor orders a structural MRI when a patient reports persistent headaches; the scan reveals whether a tumor, cyst, or other physical abnormality is present that might explain the symptoms.
What it isn’t
It is not a functional scan—it shows what the brain looks like, not what it is doing. Structural MRI cannot measure brain activity, blood flow, or which regions are 'lighting up' during thought or emotion.
Commonly misused online
People often assume structural MRI can diagnose psychiatric conditions like depression or ADHD by showing visible brain differences, but structural scans alone cannot reliably diagnose these conditions without clinical context.
