Striatum

The striatum is a major subcortical structure in the brain, composed of the dorsal and ventral regions, which serves as the primary input station for the basal ganglia. It integrates dopaminergic signals related to prediction errors and value tracking to facilitate learning, motor control, and habit formation.

What this means in real life

When you first learn to drive, your conscious brain works hard; after months of practice, your striatum automates the routine—you shift gears without thinking, freeing your attention for the road.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as the entire basal ganglia; the striatum is one component of the basal ganglia system. It is also not primarily responsible for conscious thought or emotion—those involve the cortex and limbic system.

Commonly misused online

People often conflate the striatum with 'reward center' as if it only handles pleasure, when it actually coordinates movement, learning, and decision-making across many contexts, including aversive ones.
