Sleep Architecture
The pattern and quality of your sleep cycles—how long you sleep, how often you wake, and how much time you spend in different sleep stages.

The organization and composition of sleep, including sleep duration, continuity (uninterrupted sleep versus fragmentation), and the proportion of time spent in different sleep stages (light, deep, and REM sleep). Sleep architecture is measured through polysomnography and reflects overall sleep quality and restorative function.
What this means in real life
A person with healthy sleep architecture might sleep 7 hours with only one or two brief awakenings and spend 20% of the night in deep sleep. Someone with poor architecture might wake five times per night or spend too little time in restorative deep sleep, feeling exhausted despite sleeping 8 hours.
What it isn’t
It's not simply how long you sleep. You can sleep 8 hours but have fragmented, poor-quality architecture with frequent awakenings and insufficient deep sleep—leaving you unrested despite the duration.
Commonly misused online
People often use it as a synonym for 'sleep schedule' or 'sleep routine,' but architecture specifically refers to the internal structure and stages of sleep itself, not when or how regularly you go to bed.
