Single-arm Studies

Clinical trials where everyone gets the same treatment with no comparison group, using historical data to judge results; fast but less rigorous than randomized trials.

Single-arm studies are clinical trials where all participants receive the same treatment without a comparison group, relying on historical data or surrogate endpoints to assess efficacy. They are useful for fast testing in rare diseases or when a control is unethical, but they cannot prove the treatment is superior to alternatives without a randomized control group.

What this means in real life

A hospital tests a new physical therapy technique on 50 stroke patients and measures their recovery progress over six months. Without a control group doing standard therapy, they compare results to published recovery rates from previous years.

What it isn’t

Not the same as a randomized controlled trial, which splits participants into treatment and control groups. Single-arm studies lack the direct comparison that makes it harder to prove a treatment caused the improvement rather than other factors.

Commonly misused online

Often dismissed as 'worthless' or 'not real science,' when in fact they're valuable for early-stage research, rare diseases, or ethical situations where withholding treatment would be harmful.
