Signal-to-noise Ratio
The strength of a desired signal compared to background noise or interference. Higher ratios mean clearer, more reliable measurements.

A measure of how strong a meaningful signal is relative to unwanted background noise or interference in a measurement or observation. In science and engineering, a higher ratio indicates clearer data and greater confidence in results; a lower ratio suggests the signal is harder to distinguish from noise, reducing measurement reliability.
What this means in real life
When listening to a faint radio station, a strong signal-to-noise ratio means you hear the music clearly; a weak one means static drowns out the broadcast. Turning up the volume helps only if the station's signal is genuinely strong.
What it isn’t
It is not simply 'how loud' or 'how strong' something is in absolute terms. A very faint signal can have excellent signal-to-noise ratio if the background noise is even fainter; conversely, a loud signal buried in louder noise has poor ratio.
Commonly misused online
Often used metaphorically to dismiss any information someone dislikes as 'noise,' without checking whether the signal is actually weak or the noise genuinely high. This flattens the term into a vague criticism rather than a measurable quantity.
