Sexual risk-taking refers to behaviors that increase the likelihood of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or experiencing unintended pregnancies, commonly including unprotected sex, multiple partners, or inconsistent condom use. The term originates from public health research and encompasses a broad scope of actions that compromise sexual safety, regardless of individual intent or context.
What this means in real life
A teenager at a party has unprotected sex with someone they just met after drinking, without discussing sexual history or contraception—increasing exposure to STIs and pregnancy.
What it isn’t
It is not the same as consensual sex between informed adults using protection. Many people conflate any sexual activity outside marriage or monogamy with risk-taking, but protected, consensual sex between adults is not inherently risky.
Commonly misused online
Social media often frames all casual sex as 'risky' regardless of precautions taken, or uses the term to shame people for any non-traditional sexual choices rather than focusing on actual health hazards.
