Sensor Correlation

The process of matching data from multiple sensors (radar, infrared, visual) to confirm they're detecting the same object or event.

The technical process of cross-referencing and aligning observations from two or more independent sensors—such as radar, infrared cameras, or visual systems—to verify they are detecting the same target or phenomenon. Used in military, aviation, and scientific contexts to increase confidence in detections and rule out sensor errors or false readings.

What this means in real life

When an airport's radar detects an aircraft and simultaneously the control tower's visual observation and infrared system confirm the same blip at the same location and altitude, those three sensors are correlated—proving the detection is real, not a glitch.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as sensor fusion, which combines data from multiple sensors into a single unified picture. Correlation simply verifies that different sensors are seeing the same thing; fusion integrates their data into one coherent output.

Commonly misused online

Social media often uses 'sensor correlation' to mean 'multiple sources agree,' treating any alignment of reports as proof of truth—ignoring that correlated sensors can all be fooled by the same environmental factor or calibration error.
