Self-concept

Self-concept is the mental picture you hold of yourself, including your beliefs about who you are, your strengths, weaknesses, and overall identity.

Self-concept — BrainHook Glossary card

Self-concept is the internal, cognitive framework comprising an individual's beliefs, perceptions, and evaluations about their own identity, abilities, and characteristics. It is a dynamic construct that evolves through social interaction, personal reflection, and life experiences, serving as the foundation for how a person understands and relates to themselves.

self-concept

What this means in real life

A student who receives consistent praise for math skills may develop a strong math-focused self-concept, leading them to pursue STEM subjects and feel confident in quantitative tasks, while avoiding writing-heavy assignments where they see themselves as weaker.

What it isn’t

Self-concept is not the same as self-esteem. Self-concept is what you believe about yourself (factual or perceived); self-esteem is how much you value or like yourself based on that belief.

Commonly misused online

People often use 'self-concept' to mean 'self-image' or 'how you present yourself online,' but it actually refers to your internal, private beliefs about who you are—not your curated public persona.
