Selection pressure is a directional force in evolution caused by environmental factors that favor specific traits, increasing an organism's fitness. It systematically drives the prevalence of advantageous characteristics, such as antibiotic resistance in microbes, by reducing the survival of less adapted variants. This concept applies broadly across biology, from microbial communities to animal populations, and is distinct from random genetic drift.

What this means in real life

When antibiotics kill most bacteria in an infection, the few resistant bacteria survive and multiply, making the infection harder to treat. The antibiotic acts as a selection pressure favoring resistance.

What it isn’t

It is not a conscious choice or intentional design. Selection pressure is an impersonal environmental condition—no one or nothing is 'selecting' traits on purpose; traits simply persist or vanish based on survival and reproduction outcomes.

Commonly misused online

Often used vaguely to mean 'any competitive force' or 'social pressure to conform,' when it specifically refers to biological or environmental factors that affect survival and reproduction rates in populations.
