Secondary compounds, also known as secondary metabolites, are chemical substances produced by plants that are not directly involved in growth, development, or reproduction but serve vital ecological roles such as defense against herbivores, attraction of pollinators, or protection from environmental stress. They differ from primary metabolites like sugars and amino acids, which are essential for basic life processes. These compounds are often specialized and vary widely across plant species, playing a key role in plant-herbivore interactions.

What this means in real life

When a caterpillar chews a tomato leaf, the plant produces extra alkaloids that taste bitter and can sicken the insect—discouraging it from eating more. The same compounds make the plant less appealing to other herbivores.

What it isn’t

These are not waste products or byproducts of failed metabolism. They are intentionally synthesized, energetically costly compounds that confer survival advantages; their presence signals active plant strategy, not cellular garbage.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'toxins' or 'poisons'—people assume all secondary compounds are harmful to humans. In reality, many (like resveratrol in wine or curcumin in turmeric) are neutral or beneficial; toxicity depends entirely on dose and context.
