Rugosity
The roughness or surface irregularity of a reef structure, created by branching corals and complex textures that provide habitat complexity.

What this means in real life
A healthy reef with dense branching corals has high rugosity, offering countless hiding spots for small fish; a flattened reef with only encrusting corals has low rugosity, leaving fish more exposed to predators.
What it isn’t
Rugosity is not the same as coral cover or biodiversity. A reef can have high coral cover but low rugosity if corals are flat and encrusting, or low cover but high rugosity if remaining corals are highly branched.
Commonly misused online
Social media often conflates rugosity with overall reef 'health' or 'beauty,' but rugosity is a specific structural measure—a degraded reef can temporarily retain high rugosity even as its ecological function declines.
