Pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (py-GC-MS) is a coordinated analytical technique that first thermally decomposes a sample into smaller volatile fragments (pyrolysis), then separates these fragments by gas chromatography, and finally identifies their molecular structures using mass spectrometry. It is widely used to analyze complex materials like polymers, microplastics, and biological tissues where direct identification is difficult.

What this means in real life

A forensic lab uses this technique to analyze a plastic bag found at a crime scene, heating it until it breaks apart into smaller molecules, then identifying the exact polymer type and additives to match it against a suspect's trash.

What it isn’t

It is not simply burning something and measuring smoke. Pyrolysis-GC-MS is a controlled, precise analytical process that identifies specific chemical compounds; burning is uncontrolled combustion that destroys most structural information.

Commonly misused online

Often shortened to 'Py-GC-MS' in technical forums, but sometimes misrepresented as a 'quick identification tool' when it actually requires skilled interpretation and can take hours per sample.
