PTSD — BrainHook Glossary card

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. Symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional detachment can persist long after the event, affecting daily functioning. It often requires professional intervention and may be linked to broader public health challenges.

What this means in real life

A car accident survivor flinches at sudden noises, avoids driving, and has nightmares about the crash months later—their nervous system remains stuck in threat-detection mode.

What it isn’t

Not simply being upset or stressed after a difficult event. PTSD involves persistent, severe symptoms lasting weeks or months that interfere with work, relationships, or self-care—not normal grief or temporary worry.

Commonly misused online

Social media often uses 'PTSD' casually for any bad experience ('I have PTSD from that embarrassing moment'), diluting the term's clinical meaning and trivializing actual sufferers' debilitating symptoms.
