Production Committee System

A financing model where multiple companies co-invest in an anime project, sharing costs and profits rather than one studio bearing all expenses.

Production Committee System — BrainHook Glossary card

A financing structure common in Japanese anime production where multiple corporate sponsors collectively fund a project, sharing both financial risk and future revenue based on their investment stakes. This consortium approach distributes costs across investors rather than placing full production burden on a single studio.

What this means in real life

A Japanese anime series might be produced by a committee including the animation studio, a TV network, a toy manufacturer, and a music publisher—each contributing money and having input on creative decisions, then splitting revenue from broadcast, merchandise, and licensing.

What it isn’t

It is not a single production company making all decisions alone, nor is it a loose partnership where one entity dominates. The committee system requires formal shared governance and equal (or negotiated) stakes, not a hierarchy where one studio outsources work to others.

Commonly misused online

Western fans sometimes use 'production committee' to mean 'the people who ruined my favorite show,' conflating the system itself with perceived creative interference—when the committee is simply the standard funding and oversight model, not inherently a source of problems.
