Polarization

The orientation and alignment of electromagnetic waves as they travel through space, often affected by magnetic fields or materials they pass through.

The direction and alignment of the electric and magnetic fields in electromagnetic radiation. Polarization describes whether light or radio waves oscillate in a single plane, multiple planes, or in a circular pattern. It can be altered by magnetic fields, dust, or plasma encountered during transmission.

What this means in real life

Sunlight reflecting off a lake's surface becomes polarized (aligned in one direction), which is why polarized sunglasses reduce glare by blocking that specific orientation of light waves.

What it isn’t

Polarization is not the same as intensity or brightness. Two light beams can have identical brightness but completely different polarization states, and you cannot see polarization with your naked eye—it requires special instruments to detect.

Commonly misused online

People often use 'polarization' to mean political division or social conflict, conflating the physics term with metaphorical 'opposing sides.' The physics meaning refers only to wave orientation, not disagreement.
