Planktonic Bacteria
Free-floating microorganisms that exist individually in liquid, rather as attached components within a biofilm. They are unprotected by the biofilm's protective matrix and are more vulnerable to cleaning agents targeting exposed cells.

These are microorganisms that float freely in liquid environments, existing individually rather as attached components within a structured community. Unlike bacteria trapped in a biofilm's extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), planktonic types are not protected by the biofilm's protective matrix. This distinction makes them more vulnerable to surface-level cleaning agents that target exposed cells, as they lack the biofilm's resilience.
What this means in real life
When you get a urinary tract infection, the bacteria initially float freely in your urine as planktonic cells before some settle on the bladder wall and form a protective biofilm.
What it isn’t
Not all bacteria in water are planktonic—many form biofilms (sticky, surface-attached colonies) that are far harder to kill. Planktonic doesn't mean 'harmless'; these cells can still cause serious infections.
Commonly misused online
Often conflated with 'free-living bacteria' or assumed to mean bacteria that are always harmless. In reality, planktonic bacteria cause many acute infections; the term simply describes their physical state, not their danger level.
