Persister Cells

These are a specialized subpopulation of bacteria that survive lethal antibiotic treatment without possessing genetic resistance mutations. Unlike resistant strains, they enter a dormant or slow-growing state that temporarily halts cellular activity, allowing them to evade drugs that target active processes. They eventually resume normal growth, potentially causing recurrent infections after the antibiotic course ends.
What this means in real life
A patient takes antibiotics for a urinary tract infection; most bacteria die, but a few enter a sleep-like state and survive. Weeks later, when the immune system weakens, those dormant cells wake up and cause a relapse.
What it isn’t
Not the same as antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Resistant bacteria have genetic mutations that let them survive; persisters are genetically identical to their siblings but simply inactive, making them vulnerable again once they resume growth.
Commonly misused online
Often conflated with antibiotic resistance on social media, leading people to think persisters represent a new 'super-bug' threat. In reality, they're a survival tactic, not a genetic adaptation.
