Perception Gap

A mismatch between what companies believe consumers want and what consumers actually want or do in reality.

Perception Gap — BrainHook Glossary card

A disconnect between a company's assumptions about consumer preferences, behaviors, or values and what consumers genuinely think or do. It arises when brands misread market signals, rely on outdated data, or fail to account for shifting attitudes—leading to misaligned products, messaging, or business models.

What this means in real life

A parent believes their teenager thinks they're completely out of touch and uncool, but the teenager actually respects their parent's advice—they just express it differently. The parent's assumption doesn't match reality.

What it isn’t

Not the same as a simple disagreement or conflict. Two people can disagree on an issue while still accurately understanding each other's actual position. A perception gap is specifically about being wrong about what the other person thinks.

Commonly misused online

Often used to mean 'people disagree with me' or 'my group is misunderstood,' when the actual term requires evidence that beliefs about the other side are factually inaccurate, not just unpopular.
