Pathobionts
Pathobionts are tolerated residents that stay harmless at low numbers but cause damage when they multiply or the host weakens.

Pathobionts are commensal microorganisms that remain harmless or beneficial under normal conditions but become damaging when their numbers increase or the host environment changes. Unlike strict pathogens, they are naturally tolerated at low levels and only trigger disease in contexts like dysbiosis or immune dysfunction.
What this means in real life
Candida albicans lives harmlessly in your mouth and gut, but when antibiotics kill competing bacteria or your immune system weakens, it can overgrow and cause thrush—a painful yeast infection.
What it isn’t
Not the same as permanent pathogens that always cause disease. A pathobiont is opportunistic and context-dependent; the same organism can be benign in one person and harmful in another, depending on immune status and microbial balance.
Commonly misused online
Often conflated with 'bad bacteria' or 'germs'—people assume pathobionts are inherently dangerous rather than understanding they're normally peaceful residents that turn problematic only under specific circumstances.
