Passive sensing refers to the collection of data through sensors that operate without active user input or interaction, capturing information such as location, sound, or movement in the background. It is commonly used in research to monitor real-world behaviors, environmental conditions, or health metrics unobtrusively. Unlike active sensing, which requires deliberate user participation, passive sensing relies on ambient or continuous data streams, making it valuable for long-term, naturalistic observation.

What this means in real life

Your phone's accelerometer tracks how many steps you walk each day without you doing anything—it simply records motion data automatically, even when you're not thinking about it.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as active data collection, where people deliberately provide information (like filling out a survey or manually logging exercise). Passive sensing happens without conscious participation.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'spying' or 'surveillance,' though passive sensing is a neutral technical process—the ethical concern lies in *how* collected data is used, not in the sensing itself.
