Nuclear Decay

The process by which unstable atomic nuclei spontaneously break apart, releasing energy and transforming into different elements.

The spontaneous breakdown of an unstable atomic nucleus into a lighter nucleus and radiation (alpha, beta, or gamma particles). This process releases energy and converts one element into another. It occurs naturally in radioactive materials and is the basis for radiometric dating, which measures Earth's age by tracking how parent isotopes decay into daughter products over time.

What this means in real life

A uranium-238 atom in ancient rock slowly transforms into lead-206 over billions of years, releasing radiation in the process. Scientists measure the ratio of uranium to lead in zircon crystals to determine how old the rock is.

What it isn’t

It is not a chemical reaction where atoms bond or break bonds—it is a nuclear process where the nucleus itself fundamentally changes. Chemical reactions cannot trigger or stop radioactive decay; only the nucleus's inherent instability matters.

Commonly misused online

People often conflate 'radioactive' with 'dangerous' or assume all decay is rapid and explosive. In reality, many isotopes decay so slowly they pose no hazard, and decay rates are predictable and measurable, not random or catastrophic.
