What this means in real life
A doctor uses an MRI scan to check whether a patient's headaches are caused by a tumor or structural problem, or a researcher uses fMRI to watch which brain regions light up when someone solves a math problem.
What it isn’t
It is not mind-reading or a direct window into thoughts and emotions. Neuroimaging shows physical brain activity and structure, but cannot reliably decode specific thoughts, intentions, or diagnose psychiatric conditions with certainty on its own.
Commonly misused online
Social media often claims neuroimaging 'proves' that certain behaviors (addiction, political beliefs, attraction) are hardwired or unchangeable, when scans only show correlation, not causation or permanence.
