It describes how a narrative element contributes to plot progression, thematic development, audience engagement, or emotional resonance, rather than existing merely for decoration.
What this means in real life
In a heist film, a character's seemingly throwaway mention of being afraid of heights serves a narrative function when that fear becomes the reason they can't climb to the vault—it creates tension and forces the team to adapt their plan.
What it isn’t
It's not the same as literary symbolism or metaphor. A symbol carries hidden meaning; a narrative function is about the practical job something does in moving the story along, whether obvious or subtle.
Commonly misused online
People often use it to mean 'any role a character has' rather than specifically the structural purpose something serves. Not every character trait or scene element has a strong narrative function—some are just filler.
