Media Mix

The combination of different channels and platforms used to promote or distribute a product, brand, or content across multiple formats.

Media Mix — BrainHook Glossary card

A strategic approach to marketing and distribution that uses multiple channels—such as television, print, digital, social media, and merchandise—to reach audiences and reinforce a brand or product. The term originated in advertising and has expanded to describe how content, characters, or intellectual property are deliberately spread across different media formats to maximize reach and revenue.

What this means in real life

A car manufacturer might use TV commercials to build broad awareness, Instagram ads to reach younger buyers, and local radio spots in specific regions—that combination of channels is their media mix.

What it isn’t

It is not simply buying ads everywhere or spending the most money on one platform. A thoughtful media mix balances budget, audience location, and channel effectiveness rather than treating all channels equally.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'marketing mix' (which includes product, price, and distribution). Social media users sometimes use 'media mix' to mean just social media strategy, ignoring traditional and paid search channels.
