Lyman-alpha Forest

This phenomenon refers to the dense collection of absorption lines seen in the spectra of distant quasars, caused by intervening clouds of neutral hydrogen gas along the light's path. Unlike surveys that map galaxy positions directly, this method uses quasar light absorption to trace the distribution of hydrogen between us and extremely distant sources, enabling cosmological probes at redshifts where individual galaxy surveys fail. It is a critical observational strategy for DESI's BAO results and cosmological inference.
