A luminous red supergiant is an evolved massive star with an enormous, cool photosphere (appearing red) and exceptional intrinsic brightness. These stars represent a late stage in stellar evolution, typically occurring after a star exhausts hydrogen and helium fusion in its core. They are among the largest and most luminous stars known, often destined to end as supernovae.

What this means in real life

Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion is a luminous red supergiant—so vast that if placed at our Sun's position, its surface would extend past Jupiter's orbit, yet it shines thousands of times brighter than our Sun.

What it isn’t

It is not simply a 'red star' or 'bright star'—the term specifically describes an evolved massive star in a particular late-life phase, not just any reddish or luminous object in the sky.

Commonly misused online

Social media often conflates it with 'red giant,' ignoring that supergiants are vastly larger and more luminous; some posts treat all red stars as potential supergiants without considering mass and evolutionary stage.
