What this means in real life

A search-and-rescue helicopter uses this technology to locate a lost hiker at night by detecting the warmth of their body against the cooler landscape, even in total darkness.

What it isn’t

It is not a regular camera that amplifies existing light; it actively detects heat radiation itself, so it works equally well in pitch darkness without any ambient light present.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with night-vision goggles, which typically amplify visible light rather than detect thermal radiation—two fundamentally different technologies sometimes lumped together as 'seeing in the dark.'
