These patterns arise from specific alignments and mass distributions, encoding direct information about the internal structure of the lensing galaxy and testing gravity on large scales. What this means in real life

When you look through the bottom of a wine glass at text behind it, the words appear stretched and multiplied. Similarly, a distant galaxy viewed through a massive galaxy cluster appears as multiple warped copies or glowing arcs rather than its true shape.

What it isn’t

This is not about the shape of a galaxy's actual structure (spiral, elliptical, etc.), but rather how gravity warps its appearance from our viewpoint. A galaxy's true morphology and its lensed appearance are different things.

Commonly misused online

People sometimes use 'lensing morphology' to mean just any distorted galaxy image, without recognizing that the term specifically refers to the *gravitational* bending effect and the resulting visual patterns it creates.
