Isotope analysis is a chemical technique that measures the ratios of stable isotopes within a sample to determine its geographic origin, diet, or environmental history. By comparing variations in elements like carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and strontium, scientists can trace where an individual lived or what they consumed over time. It is widely used in forensics, archaeology, and ecology to reconstruct movement patterns without relying on genetic matching.

What this means in real life

A forensic investigator analyzes the oxygen isotopes in a victim's tooth enamel to determine where they grew up, since water sources in different regions have distinct isotope signatures that become incorporated into bones and teeth.

What it isn’t

It is not radioactive dating or carbon-14 dating specifically—those are just one application. Isotope analysis covers many stable and unstable isotopes across multiple elements and serves purposes far beyond age determination.

Commonly misused online

People often conflate it with 'carbon dating' alone, or assume it only works on ancient objects. In reality, it applies to modern materials and answers questions about origin and movement, not just age.
