Isekai
A fantasy genre where a protagonist is transported to or reincarnated in an alternate world, often with game-like rules or magical powers.

What this means in real life
A teenager dies in a car accident and wakes up as a baby in a medieval fantasy kingdom where magic exists; they use their modern knowledge to invent new technologies and become powerful.
What it isn’t
Not simply a story set in a fictional world or fantasy realm. The defining feature is the *displacement* or *transition* of the protagonist from their original reality; a character born in a fantasy world has no isekai element.
Commonly misused online
Often used online to describe any anime with a fantasy setting or game-like mechanics, even when the protagonist never leaves their original world. True isekai requires an explicit crossing or awakening into a different reality.
