Ion Microprobe

A laboratory instrument that uses a focused beam of ions to vaporize tiny samples and analyze their chemical composition and isotopic ratios with extreme precision.

An analytical instrument that bombards a microscopic sample with a beam of ions (typically oxygen or cesium), causing atoms to be ejected and analyzed for elemental and isotopic composition. Widely used in geology, materials science, and cosmochemistry to measure isotope ratios in minerals with spatial resolution down to micrometers.

What this means in real life

A geologist uses an ion microprobe to measure oxygen isotope ratios in a grain of zircon smaller than a grain of sand, revealing whether that mineral formed in contact with ancient water.

What it isn’t

It is not a microscope that simply magnifies samples. Rather, it actively destroys a tiny portion of the sample to extract chemical information—a destructive analytical technique, not a non-invasive imaging tool.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with electron microprobes or simply called a 'microprobe' without distinction; some assume it can analyze samples without any material loss, when in fact it consumes the analyzed spot.
