What this means in real life
When a star explodes as a supernova, it scatters iron, oxygen, and other elements into the surrounding space; these materials mix with existing gas and dust, eventually clumping together to form new stars and planets—a recycling process that has been happening for billions of years.

It is not empty vacuum or void. The interstellar medium is a dynamic, material-filled environment containing significant quantities of gas and dust, though still far less dense than Earth's atmosphere.
