Interoception

Your body's ability to sense its own internal signals—heartbeat, hunger, temperature, breathing—and interpret what they mean.

Interoception — BrainHook Glossary card

The capacity to perceive and interpret internal bodily signals such as heart rate, breathing, hunger, pain, and temperature. It involves both the sensory detection of these signals and the brain's interpretation of them, allowing you to recognize physical states and respond appropriately. Interoception is foundational to emotional awareness and self-regulation.

What this means in real life

When you notice your chest tightening and racing heartbeat during a stressful meeting, recognize it as anxiety, and take a breath to calm down—that's interoception at work, letting you sense and respond to your body's state.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as proprioception (sensing where your limbs are in space) or exteroception (sensing the external world). Interoception is specifically about detecting signals from inside your own body.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'intuition' or 'gut feeling' as if it's mystical insight, when it's actually your brain processing real physiological signals—hunger, fatigue, or tension—that you may not consciously notice.
