Internalized

Absorbed into one's unconscious beliefs and automatic responses through repeated experience, rather than consciously learned or chosen.

Internalized — BrainHook Glossary card

Absorbed into one's internal psychological framework—beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, or emotional patterns—through repeated exposure or experience, typically operating below conscious awareness. Often refers to how external social messages, relationship patterns, or cultural norms become automatic parts of how someone thinks and acts without deliberate decision-making.

internalized

What this means in real life

A child whose parent frequently criticized their appearance may internalize that message, growing up to automatically feel shame about how they look—even when no one is criticizing them now—because the belief became wired into their self-perception.

What it isn’t

Not the same as simply learning or remembering something consciously. Internalized patterns operate automatically and feel like 'just how I am,' whereas conscious learning remains something you can easily recall and choose to apply or ignore.

Commonly misused online

Often used vaguely to mean 'absorbed any negative message,' when it specifically refers to patterns that operate *below conscious awareness* and shape automatic responses, not just beliefs someone can articulate.
