Originating in the study of jokes and satire, the concept describes the process where the brain metabolizes tension by finding a logical connection that makes the absurdity sensible, transforming confusion into amusement.
What this means in real life
A friend says, 'I told my boss I needed a raise because I've been working here five years.' You expect them to say the boss agreed—but they add, 'He said, five years? That's five years too long.' The gap between your expectation and the punchline triggers laughter.
What it isn’t
It is not simply noticing something odd or wrong. Incongruity resolution requires that your brain first builds an expectation, then encounters a contradiction that surprises you—and finally makes sense of the clash. Mere weirdness without that mental journey doesn't reliably produce humor.
Commonly misused online
People often use it to mean 'anything unexpected is funny,' ignoring that the contradiction must be resolvable and make sense in hindsight. A random non-sequitur isn't incongruity resolution; the punchline has to click.
