Impulsivity
The urge to act immediately without thinking, often leading to choices made despite harmful consequences or poor judgment.

Impulsivity is the tendency to act on urges immediately without considering consequences, often characterized by poor judgment and a lack of self-control. It ranges from minor spontaneity to a core symptom of psychiatric conditions like ADHD or bipolar disorder, where actions occur despite negative outcomes.
What this means in real life
A teenager sees a video game on sale and buys it with their savings without checking their budget or considering they'd promised to save for a concert ticket—they wanted it now and didn't pause to weigh the trade-off.
What it isn’t
Impulsivity is not the same as spontaneity or being fun-loving. Spontaneous people can still think through decisions quickly; impulsive people skip the thinking step altogether and often regret their choices afterward.
Commonly misused online
Social media often conflates impulsivity with confidence or boldness—calling someone 'impulsive' as a compliment for taking risks. In reality, impulsivity usually leads to negative outcomes and is associated with poor decision-making, not admirable courage.
